Support and Services

A Supportive Community

Supporting your academic success and personal well-being is at the heart of Laurier because you can only do your best when you’re feeling your best.

We offer resources for all areas of wellness. Our staff are professional, compassionate and provide respectful personal care.

Laurier International

Laurier International is a dedicated resource for international student services and a support network for your growth and development. Studying in a new country is an adjustment so we’re here to help.

We offer support with challenges such as travelling to Canada, Canada’s immigration rules and regulations as they relate to you as an international student, and your academic transition to studying in Canada. The staff at Laurier International are available to answer your questions and provide support in all aspects of university life. They can also answer questions about daily life in your new country, like getting a bank account.

Academic Support

Our team of international student advisors are here to help you with your academic and cultural adjustment to Canada.

University is a different learning environment with new expectations. The Laurier 101 program introduces you to our academic and accessible learning supports. Receiving support, such as academic advising, is an ongoing process that will help you achieve your academic goals.

We offer:

  • One-on-one academic advising appointments.
  • A Canadian culture course.
  • Peer-led course support.
  • Specialized writing, math and statistics support.
  • Study skills development through in-class workshops, online resources and assignment planners.

English Language Support

Students attending Laurier must have excellent proficiency in the English language to benefit from university instruction presented in English.

Students who do not meet our English language requirements can choose to pursue an intensive English as a Second Language (ESL) program offered by one of our education partners or our Laurier English and Academic Foundation (LEAF) program. We provide conditional offers of admission to academically qualified students who are completing an English language certificate program through LEAF.

Physical and Mental Wellness

We use personalized mental wellness supports to respond to the unique needs of students. We provide confidential, culturally sensitive programs to all students, as well as online support in multiple languages.

Licensed health care professionals provide physical health services right on campus.

We offer:

  • Doctors and nurses.
  • Chiropractic, massage and physiotherapy.
  • Supplementary health and dental insurance.
  • Counselling, and mental health and wellness education resources.
  • Multi-faith and gendered violence support.
  • An International student health-care plan (UHIP).

International Student Leaders Peer Mentoring

Through International Student Leaders Peer Mentoring, you will be matched with an international student leader, an upper-year Laurier student, who will:

  • Help you get oriented to life at Laurier;
  • Answer your questions about living in Canada; and
  • Provide you with personalized resources during your first year on campus.
International peer mentors will contact you in the summer and continue to provide guidance through events and check-ins during the fall and winter semesters.
