Mama Aki Mother Earth Camp Registration Form

Mama Aki camp was first launched in 2018 as a partnership between the Office of Indigenous Initiatives and the Faculty of Science with the goal to engage indigenous youth in the sciences and to link science with indigenous knowledge. This summer the program will run two weeks of overnight camps at Wilfrid Laurier University on the Waterloo campus. Indigenous youth in grades seven and eight will have the opportunity to engage in science activities throughout the day. The subjects of the camps will be as follows:

Camp 1: July 1–5, 2019 – grade seven content. Topics will include composting and waste management, learning about diet, health and the environment, and learning about life in the Grand River.

Camp 2: August 5–9, 2019 – grade eight content. This will look at plants and pollination, paleoecology: stories in mud; and learning about embryo development of plants and animals.

Additional activities will include medicine walks with traditional knowledge keeper, sports and recreational activities on campus, movie nights, campfire and storytelling and much more!

This form is to be completed by parents and/or guardians of youth interested in participating in the camp. The information collected is for the only use of Wilfrid Laurier University as a means of communication and to contact parents in case of an emergency when the youth is at the camp. Youth will be selected based on their answers to the questions. Applications are due June 1, 2019.
