Print | PDFDarren Creech is a pianist, educator, and activist who graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University in 2012 with a Bachelor of Music degree. He went on to earn his Master of Music degree from the University of Toronto and his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Montreal.
Creech is not your typical classical pianist. He is known for his innovative and unconventional approach to music making, which combines elements of theatre, dance, fashion, and multimedia. He also champions contemporary music by diverse and marginalized composers, especially those who identify as queer, trans, or non-binary.
Creech’s artistic vision and social mission have earned him numerous accolades and opportunities. He has performed at prestigious venues and festivals across Canada and abroad, such as the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, the Canadian Opera Company, the National Arts Centre, and the Festival International de Lanaudière. He has also received grants and awards from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, the Toronto Arts Council, and the SOCAN Foundation.
Creech is passionate about sharing his knowledge and experience with the next generation of musicians and audiences. He teaches piano at the McGill Conservatory of Music and gives masterclasses and workshops at various institutions and events. He also engages in outreach and advocacy work through his involvement with organizations such as Rainbow Railroad, Queer Songbook Orchestra, and Musique 3 Femmes.
Creech is a proud alumnus of Laurier, where he credits his professors and mentors for nurturing his artistic growth and encouraging his creative expression. He hopes to inspire others to pursue their dreams and passions with courage and authenticity.
