Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

I received my BA from Waterloo Lutheran University, my MA from the University of Waterloo and my PhD from the University of Toronto. I lecture and publish in the sociology of education, the sociology of religion, and the sociology of men and masculinities.
In 1992, I introduced the sociology of men and masculinities to the undergraduate curriculum at Laurier, and it is 1 of the few courses in this area in a Canadian university.
Maclean’s magazine has named me a popular and key lecturer in sociology at Wilfrid Laurier University. As a former mayor of the City of Kitchener, I bring to the classroom not only the theoretical perspectives of sociology but also observations from municipal, provincial and national affairs.
I have delivered academic papers on religion, authority, masculinity, gender, education and social theory at Cambridge University, Cambridge, UK; the American University of Paris, Paris, France; the University of California, Los Angeles, USA; ATINER, Athens, Greece; and McGill University, Montreal, Canada.
I have been the academic supervisor for numerous BA theses and directed studies undergraduate courses in social change, urban renewal, gender, religion, and education. I am currently the supervisor for an undergraduate thesis titled “A Comparative Analysis of Religious Affiliation and Participation in Canadian Society.”
