How Dawn Finds Inspiration

In accordance with the Laurier motto "Inspiring Lives of Leadership and Purpose," who is someone that you aspire (either someone current or in the future) to inspire? 

As a supervisor, I am very cognizant that my primary function at the university is to create an environment that allows the people in my team to achieve what is most important for them professionally while forwarding the values of the university. We spend way too much time at work to be unhappy. I believe that part of inspiring people requires leaders to demonstrate some vulnerability, and to really try to understand the needs of our community by listening to what your colleagues are saying through their words or actions.

Working at Laurier, what inspires you?

The sense of community and people’s generosity of knowledge sharing. I also appreciate the diversity of thought and perspectives and our willingness to stand up for important principles, like EDI and Freedom of Expression.

How Dawn Inspires Others

In what ways do you see yourself as a leader within the Laurier community?

I try to demonstrate community building through my genuine interest in my colleagues, my ability to hear and accept criticism and my commitment to tackling difficult issues with care.

What is unique about your Laurier community?

The team sets aside time and is very conscientious about learning how to be a team. We prioritize understanding each others needs and challenges, preferred ways of communicating and perspectives on working together. Despite other priorities, we have a fierce sense of protecting our collective and meet regularly to engage in these sometimes difficult conversations.

How does your career at Laurier exemplify your commitment to inspiring lives of leadership and purpose?

I am extremely fortunate in that my portfolio works with students, staff and faculty and through our collective work we are here to help people have better lived, learning and working experiences. I am so grateful to have a career within a department that focuses on improvement and growth, conflict resolution, restorative justice and community building.
