Wilfrid Laurier University’s Office of Indigenous Initiatives will hold its fourth annual Indigenist Research Symposium, “Dissertation to Action: Indigenous Experience of Research with Purpose.” The public symposium takes place Dec. 4 from 8:30 a.m.- 4 p.m. in the Senate and Board Chamber on Laurier’s Waterloo campus.

Susan Dion, associate professor in the Faculty of Education at York University and director of the Master of Education Urban Indigenous Cohort, will speak about her research, which focuses on Indigenizing, decolonizing and realizing Indigenous education, Indigenous pedagogy and Indigenous education in urban contexts.

Additional speakers include:

  • Andrew Judge, coordinator of Indigenous Studies at Conestoga College
  • Lianne Leddy, assistant professor of Indigenous Studies at Laurier
  • Candace Brunette-Debassige, advisor to the provost, Indigenous Initiatives at Western University and PhD candidate

“The Indigenist Research Symposium is an opportunity to showcase the work of Indigenous researchers and emerging new Indigenous research methodologies at Laurier and beyond,” says Jean Becker, senior advisor, Office of Indigenous Initiatives.

“The intention of the symposium is to illustrate the value of Indigenous informed research not only to Indigenous communities, but to the world in general,” says Becker. “Past symposia have been very successful and well attended and we look forward to an exciting day at the fourth-annual Indigenist Research Symposium.”
